Cape motorcyclist injured in early morning crash in Fort Myers

A Cape Coral motorcyclist was injured on Tuesday when he rear-ended a vehicle.

Larry Steward, 62, was driving a Suzuki DL1000 north on US 41 in the outside lane and approaching a solid red traffic signal at the intersection of Crystal Drive. Ahead of him in the same lane, a Ford Taurus was stopped for the red light, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At 6:14 a.m., Steward failed to stop and the front of the motorcycle struck the rear of the car.

Steward sustained serious injuries and was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. Officials reported that he was in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

The driver of the Ford, Blake Barnard, 29, also of Cape Coral, was not injured in the crash.

According to the FHP, Steward was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. He was cited for careless driving.
