CCPD Holiday Heroes Food Drive Thursday

2 min read

The public has a chance to help those in need for the holidays with an annual food drive.

On Thursday, the Cape Coral Police Department will host its Holiday Heroes Food Drive at three Walmarts starting at 1 p.m. For the sixth year, the effort benefits the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

“We put it on so we can raise donations for the needy,” spokesman Cpl. Phil Mullen said.

Last year, the CCPD collected over 5,000 pounds of canned food – nearly double from 2014.

Mullen noted that Harry Chapin collected a total of 20.6 million pounds last year.

“And for every dollar they get, they turn that into $8,” he said.

On Thursday, members of the Cape’s SWAT team will be set up at the following locations:

– Walmart at 1619 S. Del Prado Blvd.

– Walmart at 505 S.W. Pine Island Road

– Walmart at 2020 N.E. Pine Island Road

“They’re going to be out collecting donations,” Mullen said.

Donations of canned food, non-perishable items and such will be accepted.

The SWAT team’s BearCat vehicle may be on site.

Officials urged the public to stop by and drop off donations.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank, an affiliate of Feeding America, is a hunger-relief organization in Southwest Florida. It solicits, collects and stores food for distribution to families and others in need through a network of over 150 nonprofit agencies in Charlotte, Collier, Lee, Glades and Hendry.
