Cape Coral poker tournament for local child Saturday

3 min read

The Michael DeCarlo Foundation and the Tabarrini Children’s Music Foundation are teaming up to sponsor a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament to benefit Paws for Maxwell Saturday, July 9, beginning with a special dinner at 5 p.m., at Coconuts Bar and Grill, 850 Lafayette St., Cape Coral.

Maxwell Cushion is a 3-year-old with autism whose special needs will be greatly enhanced by having a loving service dog at his side. Maxwell is nonverbal, prone to seizure activity, as it may be a precursor to epilepsy, is sensory overwhelmed the majority of the time, and does not recognize danger. He has no fear of water, fire nor any other potentially deadly hazards. He has been known to elope, and has escaped his home, running into busy roads, ran from the classroom and school bus, and has disappeared in stores. He does not recognize his name when being called.

The addition of a service dog could ultimately save Maxwell’s life.

The cost to obtain and train a service dog is about $15,000, and the Southwest Florida community has stepped up to support the cause, raising approximately $9,000 to date. The upcoming poker tournament is another event where all proceeds will go to the Paws for Maxwell fund.

Lena Neroni, director of the DeCarlo Foundation, believes that the Southwest Florida community has always been like one big family when it comes to those in need.

“We help each other. It’s what we’ve always done and will always do. It’s comforting to so many to know that people, even strangers, will rally together to support one another in times of need,” she said.

Preregistration and dinner will begin at 5 p.m. that evening, with the tournament beginning at 6. The cost to participate is $60, which includes 3,000 chips. If purchased in advance, participants will receive an additional 1,000 chips.

“This is going to be an evening full of lots of fun and lots of fund-raising for a wonderful local child. We are expecting about 60 players to participate, and for those who wish to cheer from the sidelines, spectators are welcome to join for $30, which includes dinner,” Lena said.

Should you tip the dealer before the tournament begins, you will also receive an additional 2,000 chips. Guests may also enjoy the many raffles and 50/50 drawings. First place winner gets $500, second place gets $250 and third place gets $100. Registration begins at 4:45 that evening.
