Mango Queen visits County Commission

1 min read

At their regularly scheduled board meeting Tuesday, June 21, the last session before summer recess, Lee County Commissioners read a proclamation for MangoMania, Pine Island’s annual tropical fruit festival.

District 1 Commissioner John Manning asked Mango Queen and native Pine Islander Summer Dooley to come to the podium. She was in attendance at the meeting with her father, Pine Island native Mike Dooley.

After posing for a photo with the commissioners, Summer read a statement about Pine Island and what it means to her.

The Dolleys have been in Lee County for five generations as commercial fishermen and Summer is a teacher at Pine Island Elementary School.

“Pine Island is a special place because of its unique character,” she said. “Fortunately, it still remains a small community where islanders support each other and local businesses. People travel from all over to visit our tropical fruit stands. It is easy to feel that you have stepped back in time …”

The Mango Queen also invited the commissioners and community to attend the 2016 MangoMania, which is scheduled for July 16-17 at the German American Club on Pine Island Road in Cape Coral.
