$707,000 Sun Splash ‘Tot Spot’ re-construction proposed

2 min read

The “Tot Spot” at Sun Splash Family Waterpark is back on the City Council agenda for Monday’s meeting at 4:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.

It was on the budget a couple of weeks ago, but was pulled at the last minute to allow the contract figures to be finalized. The item is the top topic on a light agenda.

“Tot Spot” is no longer operating at full capacity because of maintenance issues with the attraction that was added to the park in 1992. Slides and interactive features were eliminated over potential hazard concerns.

Three firms are being recommended for the project. Honc Industries will do the demolition, site work and construction will be done by Aqua Builders, and play equipment purchased from Wizard Works. The total project cost is estimated at $706,971 with a 5 percent contingency for an additional $35,348.

The funds will be taken from the Waterpark Fund through a transfer from the General Fund.

There are no public hearings on ordinances or resolutions scheduled, but three items will be introduced to council for future public hearings.

A public art project in conjunction with the Cape Coral Art League known as “Dancing with Dolphins” will be up for discussion under new business. The project is a city initiative to support public art and celebrate the Art League’s 50th anniversary.

The “Dolphins” are made of fiberglass, 72 inches tall and weigh 65 pounds. Once painted, they will be mounted on a concrete base to be installed at strategic locations throughout the city. Dolphins will be individually sponsored and displayed from March 2016 through April 2017. They are expected to draw families to follow a map of locations for “photo op” pictures and other activities.

A meeting of the CRA board of commissioners has been scheduled for 3:30 p.m. before the regular council meeting. Both meetings will approve their meeting schedules for next year.
