Grand opening to feature charity cut-a-thon
As of Saturday it will have a new name. That doesn’t mean it won’t have the same dedication to those who need compassion the most.
On Saturday, the New Barry Anton Salon by Shannon, on 1611 SE 47th Terrace, will hold a ribbon cutting and grand opening to celebrate its new name, Roots Salon, which is a play on words regarding hair as well as one of the owners being a nearly lifelong resident.
The business also will mark the day by holding its annual “We Care for Hair” Cut-a-Thon fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to raise money to help provide free wigs to those who are undergoing cancer treatment.
Bobby Welsh and Shannon Davison, owners of the salon, are continuing a tradition the former owner, Barry Anton, starting shortly after he opened his salon in 1994 before selling it to them in August.
It became the New Barry Anton Salon by Shannon as a way to show a transition in ownership before the rebranding this weekend.
“One of the things they wanted to keep going was the foundation,” said Welsh, who was an infant when his family moved to Cape Coral. “We provide a professional fitting, consultation and a free wig.”
Haircuts, shampoo and hand and arm massages will be $18 and single wax services (such as eyebrows and lips) will be $5, with the proceeds going to the foundation.
The building has some history, as it housed the first free-standing hair salon in the city in 1980, Gina’s, which was sold to Anton in 1994.
The event will feature live music, Circus Arts United will paint a mural on the side of the building to transform the exterior, and there will be activities for the kids, including face painting.
There also will be food and drink, a silent auction and raffle prizes to area restaurants, with all proceeds going to the cause.
Since taking over ownership, Welsh said they have given more than 40 wigs to cancer patients. He estimates that over the past 17 years, between 1,500 and 3,000 wigs have been donated, thanks to donations and Barry Anton, who donated much of his own money to the cause.
“It’s all about We Care for Hair and everything will be donated that day. It will be a fun day,” Welsh said. “This is our first and we plan on doing this every year and build it more and more.”
