Cape to celebrate 70th anniversary of the flag raising over Iwo Jima
Cape Coral will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the raising of the flag over Iwo Jima Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Veterans Memorial area in Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve. The event will be at 10 a.m. at the pavilion.
All Iwo Jima survivors present will be recognized and called by name, unit and/or ship. An active duty Marine will be the keynote speaker.
This also marks the 50th anniversary for the Cape Coral monument, and the official unveiling of the State of Florida’s Heritage Historical Marker will take place at the conclusion of the ceremony
The event also will feature the VFW 8463 Honor Guard, a pipes and drums group and a bugler will play “Taps” for the placement of a commemorative wreath.
The public is invited to attend.
