Schober to address Cape Historical Society
The regular monthly meeting for the Cape Coral Historical Society will be held Tuesday Jan. 14, at 2:30 p.m., at Cultural Park Theatre, 528 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral. Archaeologist Theresa Schober, currently a PhD candidate at the University of Florida, will be the guest speaker.
Originally from Canada, Schober has worked in South Florida since 1998, conducting archaeological excavations at and documenting a variety of south Florida shell mound, midden, and mortuary sites.
Her research has focused on the settlement and use of the Estero Bay estuarine system on Florida’s Gulf Coast by the Calusa Indians including extensive investigations in to how and how quickly mound sites were constructed, Schober also directed the restoration of the Mound House and Newton Park on Fort Myers Beach securing $4 million for educational exhibit, and historical preservation initiatives.
Schober’s presentation titled Mound Key “Where the new and old Worlds Collide” will be a most interesting and informative program about the natives who lived in Southwest Florida, and the Chiefdom so very close to where we live.
