Man charged with fatally shooting his wife
A Cape Coral man accused of shooting and killing his wife was arrested and charged Thursday.
Michael G. Young, 49, was immediately taken into custody by the Cape police after being discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
On Dec. 14, Young allegedly fatally shot Sally A. Young, 49, then tried to commit suicide.
Young was booked Thursday at the Lee County Jail on the charge of second-degree homicide.
“Even though an arrest has been made, our work continues as we build our case and ready it for the state to carry through to successful prosecution,” Sgt. Dana S. Coston said in a prepared statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and especially the Youngs’ 9 year-old son, who has to live with the aftermath of this horrific crime for the rest of his life,” he said.
At about 11:18 p.m. Saturday, Cape police responded to reports of multiple shots fired at 2918 S.W. First Place. Approximately two minutes later, a second caller contacted authorities and reported shots fired.
Officers were advised that one person was shot and another person possibly shot themself.
Police arrived on scene to find Sally A. Young dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
According to a report, she was shot outside of her residence and the weapon was a shotgun.
Young was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
He was treated and later released from the facility at about 2:50 p.m. Thursday.
Officials reported that the couple’s son was present during the shooting but was unharmed.
As of Tuesday, the boy was in the care of family members.
An account has reportedly been set up for the child at Wells Fargo. The public can contact any local Wells Fargo branch for information on how to contribute a monetary donation to the account.a
