Cape man injured in bicycle accident released from hospital
A Cape Coral bicyclist has been released from the hospital after nearly three months.
As of Tuesday, Edward J. Bergen, 56, of 614 S.E. 46th St., had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was transported following the accident Sept. 25 in southeast Cape Coral.
At 2:22 p.m., Bergen was riding a Huffy bicycle east on Southeast 47th Terrace along the north side of the road, traveling against the flow of traffic. As he proceeded into the intersection at Southeast Sixth Avenue, he was hit by a Nissan turning left onto Sixth from the eastbound lanes of 47th Terrace.
The front tire of Bergen’s bicycle collided with the front bumper of the car, according to police.
Bergen was ejected from his bicycle onto the upper hood and lower windshield of the Nissan. After impacting the lower windshield, Bergen rolled off of the car and onto the pavement of the road.
Bergen sustained serious bodily injuries and was taken to the hospital with head trauma.
Police reported that Bergen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Nissan, Russell K. Smith, 69, of 222 S.E. 46th Lane, was not injured.
The accident is apparently not alcohol or drug related, according to police.
