Appreciation lunch for vets set for Nov. 8

2 min read

For all our military veterans have done for our country, the least we can do is offer them lunch every once in a while.

Lake Kennedy Center on Santa Barbara Boulevard will host the first Veterans Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m., to recognize the service, contributions and sacrifices of our local veterans.

The lunch is free to all veterans and $7 for non-veterans.

For senior center recreation specialist Myri Del Leon, it has been a passion for her to show thanks for those who served.

“It’s a day for us to show appreciation for them as a community so I hope we really try to come out and support the event,” Del Leon said. “By showing appreciation to our veterans, it’s the right thing to do.”

Del Leon said she expects more than 60 to attend the luncheon, and so far about 40 have preregistered. She said there’s still plenty of time to commit.

The keynote speaker will be Jonathan Scalone, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.) with Hope Health Care Services.

Community partners for the luncheon are United Nursing Services and Jan Wallace with Amerivest Realty, who will contribute the desserts, Del Leon said.

There also will be raffles, door prizes and entertainment by the seniors and for the seniors for the event that will hopefully be done annually.

“This is our first time and we really want to show our appreciation for our veterans. There is a lot going on right now and our veterans don’t have as much support as they need to have,” Del Leon said. “We want them to know they will feel appreciated.”

Veterans can wear their military attire, if they so wish.
