Redneck Games, Family Fun Day looking for sponsors
This summer’s hottest local event may have a new location, but that same down-home attitude will remain.
All they need are a few more sponsors to make it an undisputed success.
The Lee County Family Fun Day and Redneck Games has been moved to the North Fort Myers Drive-In and Flea Market as a way to keep the event close to home with that fun, tongue-in-cheek “redneck” feel.
“I think it will be a good venue for us. There will be lots of room and more of that ‘redneck feel,'” said North Fort Myers’ honorary mayor Al Giacalone.
“Most important, it’s in North Fort Myers,” North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Chris Jackson said.
It will be held on Monday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Last year, the event was held at the German-American Club in Cape Coral. While it was a success, drawing around 2,500 people, it didn’t have the same feel being 10 miles outside of the area limits.
There will be adult games like toilet horseshoes, corn hole toss and the Redneck Six Tathlon.
This signature head-to-head event will test the stamina of the participants. Events include the tire roll and stack, remote control toss, Redneck appetizer (Spam on a cracker), hangin’ the dirty laundry and ringing the redneck dinner bell.
New events include the manly man mattress toss and bobbing for frozen pig’s feet, which will join ongoing activities include backyard bowling with tires and trashcans, the four wheel drive swimming pool,
The little ones can have fun doing things like peanut spittin’, pigs ear toss, and an obstacle course.
Entertainment will feature the best local country and bluegrass, as well as the Calendar Girls, and contests will be held throughout the day such as the largest tattoo, biggest hair and best mullet. Also, the Mighty Men of Grasscar, a local lawnmower racing organization will have their machines on display.
A variety of food venders will be on hand, and soda and beer will be available. Admission is $3 for the whole day, with 5 and under free, and parking is free.
Giacalone said the theme for this event is family values.
“It was meant to be an inexpensive day of entertainment. You can spend the whole day there. The kids have games for them,” Giacalone said.
The event is still looking for a title sponsor and have a few festival sponsor positions available.
“We’re looking for some sponsorship levels to help offset the cost. That aside, we think this will be a wonderful event for the whole community, full of fun and good-natured foolishness,” Jackson said. “There is a shortage of affordable things for families to do. We think we filled that gap.”
“We’re hitting a couple bumps with the new venue, but we will get them ironed out. People who come won’t know the difference,” Giacalone said.
