2 min read

Two people fled the scene of a car-in-canal crash in south Cape Coral Thursday night but were located by police responding to the accident, officials said Friday.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. Cape Coral Fire Department units from Station 6 responded to 1409 El Dorado Parkway West after a 911 call.

Crews from Ladder 6 and Rescue 6 found a green Lexus on the west side of the canal in the 1400 block of the parkway. After making initial contact with one of the occupants, firefighters entered the water and confirmed nobody was still in the car or injured.

Two other occupants fled on foot but were located by Cape Coral police, officials said.

The crash is under investigation by the Cape Coral Police Department.

Vehicles entering canals are not uncommon in a city where canals are prevalent, officials said. Cape Coral firefighters respond to 20-30 calls for vehicles into the water each year.

“These numbers can be lowered by following basic driver safety rules which include watching your speed, especially at night,” fire officials said in a prepared statement. “Even though all dead ends are marked with reflective signs, excessive speed causes a loss of reaction time, so that by the time the driver realizes the road has ended, the car has passed the point of no return. Slow down.”
