Man remains hospitalized following fatal scooter accident
A man remained hospitalized Tuesday after a scooter accident that left one person dead.
Steven Mitchell was listed in good condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was transported following the accident Saturday night at Pine Island Road and Commerce Creek Boulevard.
At 10:09 p.m., the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to call about a two-vehicle crash at Pine Island and Commerce Creek.
A 2012 Taoi O scooter, driven by Mitchell and ridden by passenger Karen Cagle, 20, was traveling westbound on Pine Island in front of a 2006 Hummer 3, officials reported.
At some point, the Hummer struck the back of the scooter and drug it westbound on Pine Island until both vehicles came to a stop. The impact caused Mitchell and Cagle to be ejected from the scooter.
Officials reported that Cagle sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mitchell also sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to the hospital.
It was unclear Tuesday if the driver of the Hummer, Bobby Ray Doyle, was injured in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing, according to officials.
