A man involved in a scooter crash that left one person dead has been released from the hospital.

As of Tuesday, Steven Matthew Mitchell, 20, of 53 W. Mariana Ave., Apt. A, North Fort Myers, had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken after the accident, officials said.

At about 10 p.m. May 18, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle crash at Pine Island Road and Commerce Creek Boulevard. A 2006 Hummer 3 crashed into a 2012 Taoi O scooter, which was being ridden by Mitchell and Karen Marie Cagle, 20, of 111 Florida Road, Lehigh Acres.

According to officials, Mitchell was driving the scooter west on Pine Island. Behind it was the Hummer, also traveling west and being driven by Bobby Ray Doyle, 55, of 914 S.E. 20th Court.

At some point, the Hummer apparently struck the back of the scooter, then drug it westbound along Pine Island until both vehicles came to a stop. Due to the impact, Mitchell and Cagle were ejected.

Officials reported that Cagle sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mitchell also sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital. Doyle was not injured.

According to a crash report, Doyle told deputies that he never saw the scooter in front of his vehicle. He also reportedly admitted to drinking prior to the accident and consented to a legal blood draw.

As of Tuesday, the results of the blood test were pending.

The investigation is still ongoing, officials reported.
