Public advisory: Notification of training exercise
There will be a large-scale multi-agency training exercise Friday, April 19, at the former Kmart store at the Coralwood Mall, at 2301 Del Prado Blvd. The training exercise begins at 9:30 a.m. and will run through 6 p.m.
The agencies that are scheduled to participate are:
– Cape Coral Fire Department
– Cape Coral Police Department
– Lee County Sheriff’s Office
– Fort Myers Fire Department
– FBI
– Florida National Guard 48th Civil Support Team
There will be several large trucks – mobile command vehicles – in the parking lot for the exercise, as well as members of the SWAT team and HAZMAT team. The public need not be alarmed as it is only a training drill.
The exercise was organized and scheduled weeks before the events in Boston on Monday.
However, the terrorist attack in Boston underscores the need for public safety agencies at all levels – local, state and federal – to be prepared for such events, officials reported. Cooperative training exercises, such as the one on Friday, are a proactive measure to ensure that local residents have well-trained and prepared first responders.
