3 min read

The Friends of the Cape Coral Library is getting ready for its giant spring book sale, which will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Cape Coral Library at 921 S.W. 39th Terrace off Mohawk Parkway.

More than 8,000 books will be on display in the large meeting room, and most are priced at $2 and under, and the book sale allows the Friends to continue its support of the library.

“We have about 200 members, we do this twice a year and it’s the biggest fundraiser for the library,” said Friends past-president Paula Novander. “Everything will be there. Children’s fiction, non-fiction, gardening, you name it.”

Besides storage and display equipment and improvements and repairs to the library, these funds help provide a variety of special programs for children, teens and adults.

One of the main programs it funds is the summer reading program for the kids, and allows the library to pay for magicians, jugglers and puppet programs.

“It pays for the summer reading programs and that keeps kids reading in the summer, so when they go back in the fall, they haven’t lost education,” said Tori Hersh, Cape Coral Library head librarian. “It keeps them moving forward educationally.”

The Friends of the Library also provide refreshments and prizes for the Earth Day coloring contest, the chess club, English Cafe and other programs.

The sale kicks off on Thursday from 3 to 5:30 p.m. for a member’s only preview, where you can join at the door for a $10 donation. The event continues Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All the books are donated by the community, and any leftovers are donated to other organizations so they aren’t recycled from one sale to the next, Novander said.

In recent years, Novander said the sales have raised between $6,000 and $7,000 for the library, which that money going to help replace the audio-visual equipment in the meeting room.

“The book sale is a huge asset to the library and friends of the library. The proceeds are paying for the furniture, as well as the summer reading programs,” Hersh said. “Our friends are among the largest friends group of Lee County.”

Friends of the Library are community members and volunteers who support the activities of the library. Annual membership is $10 for individuals, $15 for a family, $50 for civic benefactor and $100 for corporate benefactor.

“I’m grateful for all the Friends of the Library do for us and the staff,” Hersh said.

Donations are always welcome. For more information, call the library at 533-4500.
