Show continues Sunday at Lake Kennedy
Some of the greatest music of the last 120 years or so will be heard at the Lake Kennedy Center this weekend.
Director Betty Dentzau and the “Act it Out” team will present the second of two performances of “Through the Years,” on Sunday. The doors will open at 1:30 p.m.
The musical opened Friday.
The shows are a fundraiser for the senior center, which was closed after a broken pipe flooded the building in mid-January.
The hope is to get people to come to the city-owned facility, said Dentzau, who works there, teaching people to dance, sing and act.
“Because of the situation, tickets aren’t selling as expected. We’re trying to do what we can for the center.” Dentzau said.
“Through the Years” incorporates comedic skits mixed in with music and dancing from the music of the times.
This performance starts with the honky-tonks of the 1890s, moves through the Speakeasies of the 1920s and 1930s, and finishes during the disco era.
“We’re going to have a little skit with saloon girls and cowboys, and then we’re going to take the audience into a speakeasy,” Dentzau said. “We’re also going to have the talking movies of the ’30s, then go into the ’50s with ‘American Bandstand.'”
The show will feature impersonators of Dean Martin, Marilyn Monroe and Connie Francis, with the finale being “Anything Goes.”
“It’s an historical tour through music,” Lake Kennedy’s Myra Del Leon said. “She’s going from the turn of the century to the disco era. It takes you through a long history of music.”
“Act it Out” is an ensemble of people from their early 50s to 86 who want to learn to perform, Dentzau said. Some members of the troupe have earned roles for shows at the Cultural Park Theatre.
“It’s a place to do things you wouldn’t ordinarily do. We let our hair down,” Dentzau said. “It’s a learning experience where you meet new friends.”
Tickets are $10 for the matinee.
“I want people to be aware of this great opportunity to see such a great show,” Del Leon said.
