Cape man charged with attempted felony murder
A Cape Coral man is accused of trying to kill his wife by allegedly driving into their home while she was inside and then attacking her with a baseball bat.
Jose Luis Acevedo, 41, of 303 S.W. 16th Terrace, was charged Tuesday with one count each of crimes against person specific felony commit act could cause death and aggravated assault with deadly weapon without intent to kill.
He remains at the Lee County Jail without bond, according to records.
At 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, Cape police received a call about a vehicle that had crashed into a home, at 303 S.W. 16th Terrace. Officers responded to the scene and found that a mini-van had hit the rear exterior wall of the home.
Police located Acevedo and his wife, Yolima Papa-Sanchez, 45, inside.
An investigation revealed that Acevedo willfully drove the van into the exterior wall of the home, where the master bedroom is located, knowing that Papa-Sanchez and their son, 7, were inside, according to officials.
Acevedo then exited the mini-van and walked around to the open garage door, where he confronted his wife. Police reported that the two began to argue.
Acevedo allegedly armed himself with an aluminum baseball bat and struck Papa-Sanchez multiple times with it, causing serious injuries to his wife.
The incident occurred in front of the couple’s son, police reported.
Papa-Sanchez sustained injuries to her skull, fractures to her forearm and multiple contusions, lacerations and defensive wounds, according to officials.
She was trauma-alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Acevedo was taken into custody and charged. During an interview with detectives, he reportedly confessed that he had tried to kill his wife.
The couple’s son was not injured and is in the care of relatives.
Acevedo has a court appearance scheduled for April 8.
