Cape Chorale to again offer singing Valentines

3 min read

It will be a busy month for the Cape Chorale Barbershop Chorus.

Several quartets from the Chorus will deliver singing valentines in Cape Coral, Fort Myers and surrounding areas in time for Valentine’s Day, will host its annual show nine days later, and host a guest performance from one of the renowned singers in the genre early in March.

A quartet from the chorus will deliver the Singing Valentine to the loved one of your choice. The valentine will include a quartet dressed in tuxedos that will sing two songs, deliver a live rose, a box of chocolates, and a Valentine card.

The cost is $50 with deliveries outside Cape Coral and Fort Myers available for an additional charge.

“There were 70 requests last year to send their betrothed a little love and affection from one person to his or her spouse,” said Bob Lachance, co-chair of the chorus.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Pediatric Speech Therapy Unit at Lee Memorial Health Systems. Cape Chorale has donated more than $28,000 over the last 15 years to this program, Lachance said.

“Each year depending on how much we do we give them some of the proceeds,” said Chas Lavallee, director of Cape Chorale. “It’s for the kids.”

“People who are in need of some comfort, that’s what we bring. The children benefit from it,” Lachance said.

The barbershop chorus also is set to present its annual show.

The chorus will present two performances of “Sentimental Journey” at Island Coast High School on Feb. 23.

Performances will be at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and will feature songs from yesteryear as well as more recent songs arranged in barbershop style.

Lachance said it’s likely you won’t hear renditions of Lady Gaga or the Black Eyed Peas, but you’ll recognize some cool, stuff when you hear it.

“We try to embellish the songs people like to fit the mode of four singers,” Lachance said. “We sing four-part harmony to ‘God Bless the USA,’ It brings tears to the guys’ eyes because people stand when they sing.”

Also featured will be entertainment by quartets Hum Dingers and Spanglish, a group of college kids whose parents were raised in another country and had to learn English in school, according to Lachance.

On Monday, March 4, the Cape Chorale Barbershop Chorus will host a guest performance 6:45 p.m. at the Rotino Senior Center at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. Free singing lessons by Jeff Ebner will be available. Ebner is a former competition judge with several decades of experience in quartets.

“He’s coming to try to help us improve our technique. It’s a cappella. If the lead person doesn’t hit the right note, nobody can harmonize with it,” Lachance said.

Cape Chorale is affiliated with Barbershop Harmony Society, an international organization in its 75th year of promoting and preserving barbershop harmony around the world.

Tickets are $17 per
