Motorcyclist critically injured in multi-vehicle crash

A motorcyclist was transported to the Lee County trauma center Wednesday after he was run over following a traffic crash on Alabama Road near the intersection of Stafford Creek Boulevard in Lehigh Acres.

Preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle turned left from southbound Alabama Road to enter the Vista Palms community shortly before at 9:05 p.m., officials with the Lee County Sheriff’s office said. The motorcyclist, a male in his 40s who was traveling north, collided with the right-rear of the car. The motorcycle then veered toward a second vehicle traveling in the opposite direction and glanced off the side of it. The rider fell from the motorcycle into the northbound roadway while the motorcycle came to rest in the southbound lane.

A witness to the crash stopped to render aid to the rider. Meanwhile, a third vehicle approached in the northbound lane of Alabama Road. Despite the witness’s attempts to warn the approaching driver,the vehicle struck the rider lying in the roadway. Reportedly, nearby residents gathered and lifted the car, which had the rider pinned underneath. The rider was extricated and transported to the Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Hospital where he was listed in critical condition early Thursday morning.

Due to the nature of the crash, deputies with the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit are continuing the investigation.

Alabama Road was closed for approximately and hour between Gifford Avenue North and Navajo Avenue.

No charges have been filed at this time, officials said. The investigation is continuing, officials said.
