Cape celebrates peace with day in the park
It was all about peace and creativity and fun at Jaycee Park on Sunday as “Peace Day in the Park” celebrated the upcoming international day of peace in Cape Coral for the fourth straight year.
The festival was an interesting mix of performance, vendors and education, all aimed at highlighting a sense of unity among mankind.
“This is for everybody,” said Pree Cicinelli, whose friend, Zachari VanDyne organized the event. “Cape Coral is a nice community and today is all about peace.”
Cicinelli brought along her bird and dog friends who, just like their human counterparts, were all about having a good, fun time at the park.
Attendees listened to and danced to live music and shopped for handmade jewelry and goods. They also had the chance to meet new people who were focused on one singular goal: worldwide peace.
“I think the whole thing is just awesome,” Cicinelli added.
Wednesday, Sept. 21, is the International Day of Peace, according to literature handed out at the event.
It was established in 1981 by a United Nations resolution but became an annual fixture in 2001.
Its purpose is to alleviate tension, conflict and to strengthen the ideals of peace.
Members of the Collaborative Arts Experiment were taking everyday items and embarking on the creation of live, living arts exhibits.
Nick Williams, who lives in Cape Coral, said it was all about creating a piece of art and encouraging others to interact and create with it. Williams said people were invited to draw, write poetry or express themselves on paper, which would then be attached to the life-sized bird cage he and his friends were creating out of palm fronds.
Williams felt the “Peace Day in the Park” was perfect for the city.
“Why not bring something like this to Cape Coral,” he said. “It’s a collaborative effort an we’re inviting everyone to be a part of it.”
Nikke Timberlake, who own Fort Myers based “Pawsotively Purrfect,” which makes healthy, gourmet treats for dogs, though “Peace Day in the Park” was a great opportunity to celebrate the furry friends in our lives.
“Most people who love animals are peaceful,” Timberlake said. “They’re grounded and very earth oriented.”
