A 5-foot-tall bird statue was reported stolen from a Cape Coral home Monday morning.
A man told police that he heard a noise at the front door of his home, located in the 500 block of Southeast 34th Terrace, between 7 and 7:30 a.m. He did not investigate because he thought it was a family member.
Later when the man went outside, he discovered that the statue was no longer on the front porch. He told police that it has been there for years. He described the statue as that of a great heron, 5 feet tall and green in color.
The man added that the statue was made to look like it is tarnished copper, but it is made of another metal. The statue weighs approximately 25 pounds and is valued at an estimated $150, according to a Cape Coral police report.
Anyone with information can contact the Cape Coral Police Department at 574-3223, or submit a tip by texting “CCPD” plus the message to CRIMES or by visiting: www.capecops.com. Tipsters can also contact Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at (800) 780-TIPS (8477) and be eligible for a cash reward.
On Monday, area law enforcement agencies reported that they were looking for the owner of a 300-pound bronze statue that they believed was stolen.
On May 21, the statue was taken in at Allied Recycling, at 3770 Veronica Shoemaker Blvd., in Fort Myers. The company contacted authorities believing that the item, consisting of three dolphins, was connected to a North Fort Myers burglary.
It turned out the statue was not tied to that case, officials said.
Lt. Tony Sizemore, spokesman for the Cape police, reported Tuesday that authorities believe that they have located the statue’s owner in Fort Myers.
