Motorcyclist suffers life-threatening injuries after striking utility pole
A motorcyclist suffered multiple life-threatening injuries after his motorcycle left the roadway and struck a wooden utility pole in the northwest Cape on Friday evening.
Neil Jesse Joiner, 25, of 3123 N.W. 16th Place, was transported as a trauma alert via Medstar to Lee Memorial Hospital and was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit late Friday night, officials said.
Cape Coral Police and Fire Rescue units were called to the single-vehicle crash in the 1800 block of Jacaranda Parkway West at at 6:25 p.m.
Joiner was traveling northbound on Chiquita Boulevard on a 2001 Honda motorcycle when he turned west onto Jacaranda Parkway.
After making the turn onto Jacaranda, Joiner accelerated to a high rate of speed, traveling an estimated 70 mph – 80 mph, officials said. According to a witness, the motorcycle began to wobble on the front end due to the high speed. The motorcycle veered to the left, exited the roadway and entered a vacant field. The Honda then struck the wooden utility pole head-on with such force as to snap the pole completely in half. Joiner was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest in the field. Lee County EMS and LCEC also responded to the scene.
A traffic homicide investigation is being conducted, and alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash, officials said, adding Joiner did not have a valid motorcycle endorsement to operate the Honda.
