Rare junonia find reported on Fort Myers Beach
Just weeks after a rare junonia find on Fort Myers Beach was shared with the Fort Myers Beach Observer, reader Robert San sent in this photo of a junonia he found on the island.
“I was doing my normal morning walk Thursday, Oct. 30 and saw this junonia sitting on top of some seaweeds about 15 feet from the water. The location is near the Hercules parking lot. I had heard that these rare shells are found only on Sanibel and other outer islands so I never even looked for it on Fort Myers Beach. So seeing it was a huge surprise,” San said.
Junonias have rarely been reported to be found on Fort Myers Beach. They are usually associated with Sanibel and Captiva in this part of Southwest Florida.
