Harry Chapin Food Bank collection at Publix
The Publix on Estero Boulevard was busy Feb. 8 with a collection for the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida.
Dozens of canned goods and other items were donated by shoppers as they exited the supermarket.
Marta Hodson, donor relations coordinator for Harry Chapin Food Bank’s Fort Myers office, said the organization serves an estimated 28,000 people a week in Charlotte and Collier counties.
As Publix customers dropped off cans of soup, corn, and jars of peanut butter and jelly.
“We always need more,” she said.
Hodson said that even though the economy has been doing better, people “still need a little assistance to get through.”
Joane Vernarelli of Rochester, was one of the Publix shoppers to drop off a bag of goods from her shopping for Harry Chapin Food Bank.
“It’s the least we can do,” Vernarelli said. “We have to give back.”
