CAN IT! Campaign food drive kicks off

3 min read

Non-perishable and canned food donations are being sought from the community this year to make the 9th annual CAN IT! Campaign food drive a success for Community Cooperative.

Pushing the Envelope, Inc., a Fort Myers based marketing communication firm, President Samantha Scott said they started the campaign nine years ago right around the time of the recession when there were newly hungry people who had lost their job and showing a real need for food. When pairing that with feeding the homeless, who were already struggling, there was a much greater demand to help start a food drive.

The campaign received the name “CAN IT” because they wanted to put hunger in its place.

“Nine years later we are still working with that,” Scott said. “We have a lot of new partners this year and we are excited to see what happens.”

The campaign kicked off Tuesday, Oct. 15, and will run through Friday, Nov. 15.

Community Cooperative’s wish list includes such items as peanut butter and jelly; Hamburger Helper; canned tuna; chicken; ham; roast beef; tuna helper; chicken helper; macaroni and cheese; pasta and pasta sauce. A complete list of food items is available at www.CommunityCooperative.com, orwww.GetPushing.com/CAN-IT.

She said for those who do not want to shop and drop off donations, they can donate through the Amazon Pantry and have items delivered to the Pushing the Envelope, Inc. office.

Communications Coordinator Annelise Przywara said more than 10,000 pounds of food has been collected since the campaign’s conception.

“Over the years we have always set a goal. It varies each year. We always hit that goal,” she said.

Scott said it is incredibly humbling to collect that much food for Community Cooperative.

“It speaks to the spirit of giving throughout Southwest Florida. People, businesses and organizations come together to support this cause. It’s really special to be a part of that. It shows you can start with one small idea and it can make an impact,” she said.

This year, Scott said they have set a goal of 1,000 food items.

“We felt that was a number we could meet and exceed,” she said.
