The community is invited to the last Estero Island Historic Society event of the season this Saturday at the Historic Cottage and Annex.

The first Springtime Garden Party will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Historic Cottage and Annex, 161 Bay Road.

“This is the first time the Historic Society has held this event. It’s something they wanted to do to close out the season,” Historic Society Board Member Janet Sailian said. “I think it was an opportunity to greet the public, not only the membership that comes to the presentations, but be open to the community as a way to visit the historic cottages and a way to raise funds. It’s really an opportunity to raise some funds and see the residents before everyone scatters for the summer.”

Admission will be free but donations are welcome.

The Garden Party will feature homemade quilts by Estero Island Historic Society Board Member Ann Alsop, as well as Fort Myers Beach afghans and crocheted handcrafts. In addition, lemonade, finger sandwiches and cookies will be provided free of charge. Bottled water will be available for purchase.

Sailian said the Historic Society was finally able to reorder the afghans, which were very popular years ago.

“They have been out of stock for quite a while and it’s pretty cool to have them back,” she said.

Sailian said the afghans, which are woven and light weight, have images of the arches that used to be over the entrance of Fort Myers Beach.

“They are nice to have as a throw on a sofa. They are conversation pieces because they have all these pictures of Fort Myers Beach landmarks,” Sailian said.

The cottage is open twice a week, Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to noon. It is staffed by volunteers who provide information and a little tour.
