One hundred and one children were surprised with Easter baskets last week at the Beach School, thanks to the Beach Kids Foundation.

“It was a surprise, a total surprise for the Easter baskets,” Beach Kids Foundation President Linda Beasley said.

Many of the children that go to the Beach School could not go to the Easter Egg hunt last Saturday, so the foundation wanted to bring Easter to them. On April 18, kindergarten through fifth grade students were surprised with baskets filled with different items geared towards each age group.

The girls received a pink basket and the boys received a blue one.

For example the kindergarten students had baskets with little bunnies, while the fifth grade students had silly string. Other items included Slinky’s, yo-yos, paddle balls and chocolate bunnies. The girl baskets were also full of bracelets and glitzy items, while the boys had matchbox cars.

“It was so much fun. We took them to the school and handed them out,” Beasley said.

She said one of the classes gave them a hand written thank you note with little drawings.

Beasley and Tracey Gore went shopping at various Dollar Stores to pick out the items.

“It really was fun. We had a good time. We had to go to so many different Dollar Stores to get 101 things,” Beasley said. “Kindergarten (basket) was my favorite. The baskets were so cute and were different from the rest of them.”

This is the first in a few years that the Beach Kids Foundation provided Easter baskets. She said they used to do the Easter Egg hunt before turning it over to the town and Bay Oaks.

Scholarship applications are still being sought for the Beach Kids Foundation. The application for the school year 2019 to 2020 can be obtained by contacting (239) 980-0661, emailing beachkidsfoundation@gmail.com, or stopping by the Red Coconut RV Park, 3001 Estero Blvd., or Century 21 TriPower Realty, 2001 Estero Blvd.

The application includes personal information, as well as the name and complete address of the school, institution, or educational course/training program the applicant plans to attend, references and an essay that shares a personal story of a challenge, setback, or failure and how one learned from that experience.

Beasley said the deadline is May 31, at 5 p.m. to turn in the application, which can be sent to Beach Kids Foundation, 2801 Estero Blvd, Suite B, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931. Those who apply have to be a Fort Myers Beach kid, or their parents have to be employed on the beach.

The awards ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 17, at Lani Kai Island View.
