Items being collected for annual garage sale

Collections are beginning for the annual Find a Home, Give a Home garage sale that is scheduled to take place at the end of March.
Isabelle Wells, co-founder of Find a Home, Give a Home pet rescue organization, said they have been holding the garage sale since the beginning of 2011. Their main fundraiser of the year raises money for vet bills, which average $3,000 a month, as well as dog and cat food and operations.
“It’s always at the same house, on the south side of the island,” she said of the garage sale taking place at 7879 Buccaneer Drive.
Unfortunately they do not have the same space as prior years to store items for the garage sale, which has pushed back the collection until mid February instead of January.
“We are missing storage very much. That is a problem that we have,” Wells said.
She encourages people to go around their house and start a little box of things they no longer want, or need.
“Little items I can take before the end of February. Anything major, that has to be the week of March 14, when we start to load the house with the big furniture,” Wells said.
She is looking for volunteers who have trucks to help them move the bigger items.
Gently used items for the garage sale are being requested.
“It can be anything and everything . . . collectibles, furniture, anything from the house,” she said, except appliances. “Hold on to them . . . the longer the better because I don’t have storage. I’m asking for people to keep it stored.”
The garage sale will take place Friday, March 22, through Sunday, March 24. Although they start to sell items on Friday, she said the real craziness begins on Saturday.
Some individuals drop off items to be sold during the garage sale on Saturday, which is immediately tagged and put out for sale.
“We start around 8 in the morning until 2:30-3 p.m. The last day is the funniest day because anything that fits in a bag you can get for $1,” Wells said. “It’s a big deal and people just absolutely love it. They buy it one year and then the next year they bring it back and then we resell it again for the rescue.”
On Saturday adoptable dogs and cats will be at the garage sale.
The garage sale also includes baked goods for sale, which Wells said they are looking for individuals who would like to donate such baked goods as cookies and breads.
Those who would like to volunteer, or donate goods for the sale are encouraged to email pets@findahomegiveahome.com, or call Wells at 239-281-0739.
