Free weekly guided walks at Newton Beach Park

1 min read

The community is invited to participate in a free weekly exploration at Newton Beach Park through a guided walk.

Mound House Environmental Educator Dexter Norris said the guided walk is held every Tuesday. The 9 a.m. walk is led by either a certified Florida naturalist volunteer, or staff of the Mound House.

“It’s really informal and usually (lasts) about 30 to 45 minutes,” he said.

The guided beach exploration typically stems around what individuals are finding. Sometimes, it’s about shells, and other days when there are not an abundance of shells, the discussions lean towards the birds that are found.

“It’s mostly observational,” Norris said. “It’s Gulf ecology and beach ecology and different wildlife we can spot.”

Although the summer months do not attract as many participants, February and March there are typically more than 30 people who attend the guided walk.

“It’s a great, short, but informative program. It gives a good reason to wake up a little earlier than you normally would,” Norris said.

People are encouraged to come prepared with sunblock, water and bug spray.

Those interested should meet under the thatched hut at 4650 Estero Blvd. For more information, call (239) 765-0865, or visit www.moundhouse.org.
