The Fort Myers Beach Little League teams held their season opening day Saturday, March 4 at Bay Oaks Recreational Center. The community was invited to come and get a hot dog and watch the boys and girls teams play. It was the 61st season of the beach’s league, and several men from the league’s first season threw opening pitches: Lee Melsek, Dan Cody, Larry DeHayes, Steve Foster and Tucker Patton. They played in the 1956-1957 beach league.

Now, there are eight teams in the league – two tee-ball, three minor teams, one major team and two senior teams.

Council Member Joanne Shamp gave the beach teams a shout-out at the Monday, March 6 council meeting and encouraged the public to go catch a Little League game sometime.

“It’s the ole ball game,” she said. “You get a sense of the full, richness of this community when you see the kids there. It was wonderful.”

The next game is a home game, girls senior softball, Friday, March 11 at 7 p.m.
