On Sunday, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit was dispatched to the Lee County Jail Core Facility located at 2501 Ortiz Avenue for a death investigation.

Investigation revealed that Michael Stephen Spiegel, age 72, jumped from the second floor landing of his cell block to his death. Spiegel was schedule to be sentenced today for the conviction in the murders of Marilyn Spiegel, age 70, and Harry Carlip, age 71, who were two marina live-aboards at Salty Sam’s Marina on San Carlos Island.

“Our investigators have thoroughly reviewed the circumstances of his death and it appears Mr. Spiegel sentenced himself the day before he was to be sentenced by the Court,” said Sheriff Mike Scott. “This has been a tragic case from the beginning when he took two lives and it ended (Sunday) with him taking his own.”
