Town officials have reported a rare event involving a Snowy Plover nest on Fort Myers Beach. The nest is located on the beachfront just north of the Sterling Avenue beach access.

Environmental Sciences Coordinator Keith Laakkonen announced the sighting of the shorebird, and the resting/nesting area has been posted around it.

“This is the farthest north and the latest Snowy Plover nest that we have ever had on Fort Myers Beach,” he said.

Snowy Plowers are protected under state and federal law. Harming or disturbing these birds, their eggs, or young is a violation punishable by up to five years imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine. One can report violations by calling 1-800-404-FWCC.

The temporary posting will be up until Aug. 31.
