Marine Science Camp seeks participants

The Ostego Bay Foundation Marine Science Center is continuing to accept applications for the remainder of its 2015 Marine Summer Camps. The nonprofit organization has set up an exciting and educational season for its summer camps for children ages six and upward. All instructional materials are provided plus a graduation luncheon will be held each Friday.
Campers will explore some of the area’s beautiful barrier islands and the waters of Estero Bay. Scheduled field and beach trips will introduce campers to sea grass communities, including plankton populations, mangrove tangles and bird nesting areas. The staff of state certified teachers -two that were recently honored for Golden Apple recognition- offers a wide diversity of expertise providing highly personalized instruction. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“Our camps are really effective. We have absolutely wonderful teachers, who are directors at the Island Coast High School Natural Resource Academy,” said Ostego Bay Foundation President Joanne Semmer. “We have kids that come back year after year. When they outgrow the program, some of them come back as interns.”
Ostego camp staff members are looking for junior counselors for next summer. This is a great opportunity for high school students to collect volunteers hours. Email Cherie Sukovich at casukovich@yahoo.com for more information.
“The marine science camp is a week-long day camp focusing on our marine environments of Southwest Florida,” Sukovich said. “Students are immersed in hands-on activities and learn firsthand the importance of our marine and estuarine environments not only for fishing and recreation, but for the overall health for our water systems.”
