Activity Details

Animal and nature photographer Jack Kenner had a fun journey with dogs, including dear Molly. He will share both the paths and insights along the way on Jan. 21.

Memory Screenings on Jan. 22 are very much what the title says. Go through an exercise with evaluation afterwards of your own memory. Pre-register for the 15-20 minute segment and pay fee of $3 which is returned at time of screening. Sponsored in conjunction with The Neuropsychiatric Research Center of Southwest Florida.

Michael Memoli will share a short history of geocaching on Jan. 22, explaining the rules and what goes into geocaches. He will also share that the library is a geocaching site.

Jeanie London on Jan. 23 will offer assistance on using seashells in your projects. Bring your own shells or bring some and use some that are provided. Bring along a glue-gun and glue stick if possible. Pre-register and $4 materials fee.

Courtesy

We’ve had events this past week that have drawn large numbers of participants. Thank you for your kindness in sharing your appreciation with the presenter and for your “thank you for making this possible” or “thanks for scheduling this.” It’s a bit disheartening when a few adults make a nuisance of themselves in trying to sneak into an event where we are limited by fire code regulations or commonsense guidelines and dishonor the reason safety regulations are established. These same individuals would be among the first in complaining, without recognition that their sneaking in a chair or leaving an unkempt place or ignoring the library’s overall concern of safety creates the problem.

Working as a Team

This past week we continued development of custom learning programs and our core group of participants, made up of members of the Fort Myers Beach Kiwanis Club and students from Beach Elementary, worked together to perfection. It was wonderful to watch the fifth graders and was fun for kids of ALL ages! Special thanks to Kiwanis and to the fifth graders for this enterprise. I anticipate that the Smart Table will be debuting in Kid’s Place during late February.

We were specifically dealing with the overall question, What does it mean to be an American? Activities focused on the difference between rights and responsibilities, where popular American foods originated from around the world, about American government, symbols, history and influential Americans who shaped the country, the meaning of signifcant American words and titles, ways that Americans can serve their country along with the rights of Americans in the Bill of Rights.

Cafe’

The cafe’ is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Manager Tara is able to regularly tempt those who frequent often, and be there to offer the occasional user a delicious cup of coffee or beverage or snack.

Display

There’s a darling collection of pig figurines on the second floor near the port holes. The enterprising display is made possible through the kindness of Pat Tardiff. If you relate to Churchill’s “I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals,” then you will smile at the figurines.

Cozy Mystery

If you’re among those readers who enjoy books heavy on character development and light on coarse or vulgar landguage or no gratuitious sex or violence scenes, come and meet Terrie Farley Moran on Jan 23 and hear her stories and journey.

Staying Healthy

Consider participating in the presentation by author Harry Gaines on Jan. 26. While we all know we should exercise, it is not an automatic given for many. Harry will highlight the benefits of fitness and healthy eating for he’s absolutely convinced that understanding why exercise and diet are central to being healthy is more motivational than simply being told to exercise. Because over 70% of health issues can be prevented, he will make a strong case for keeping one’s motivation growing.

Tour

If you want more details and are interested in the energy saving features included in the Beach Library, participate in the tour on Jan. 26. The tour begins in the foyer.

Hours

When we are closed a recorder gives the hours we are open. When open, we answer the phone in person. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 to 7; and Saturday 9 to 1. All gates close when the library closes. We look forward to seeing you.
