Public input sought for work at accesses
Four water accesses on Fort Myers Beach may receive improvements in the near future.
The Fort Myers Beach Town Council will be reviewing recommendations made by the Community Resources Advisory Board and taking public input on the sites on Monday (April 7) at its 9 a.m. meeting. The recommendations involve improvements to two beach accesses and two bayside accesses, the latter which would create park-style updates.
The recommended beach accesses are Gulf Road and Canal Street, while the bayside accesses are Gulf Beach Road and Delmar Avenue.
“We’ve made suggestions as to the designs being proposed at the accesses,” said CRAB chair Miffie Greer.
CRAB has been working on the concept of access improvements for two years. Proposed improvements include new signs to be placed at all accesses, memorial benches, running water, showers and bike racks.
“We are looking to make them as ‘green’ as we can,” said Greer.
The Town has received funding from the Lee County Tourist Development Council to make such improvements. According to Town records, funding for these projects total $64,000 for this fiscal year. Additional funding for the following fiscal year has been requested to continue these projects in the amount of $219,800.
“We are trying to use these accesses as models so that people can see what we are trying to do,” said Greer. “This should be a very positive upgrade.”
Those interested or unsure about the proposed environmentally friendly improvements are asked to attend the Monday meeting and comment. Council may approve the recommendations and, if so, work is expected to begin at those sites.
