Pretty in Pink: Upcoming Fort Myers Beach Breast Cancer Awareness benefits
As we near the third month of October, official Breast Cancer Awareness month, businesses and residents are teaming up to show awareness any chance they can. We have three amazing Breast Cancer Awareness benefits taking place very soon, so here are the details, and hope to see you out there!
The Mermaid hosts annual Walk the Walk
for Breast Cancer benefit Saturday, Oct. 13
The third annual Walk the Walk for Breast Cancer benefit will be taking place at The Mermaid Lounge and Liquors, 1204 Estero Blvd., Saturday Oct. 13, with sign-up at 11 a.m. and the walk starting at noon.
This fund-raising Poker Walk has been organized to raise funds for the Lisabet Anna Buesing Foundation, helping single mothers fight breast cancer in Lee County.
“We will walk from The Mermaid Lounge down to The Beach Pub. From there, we’ll head over to The Beached Whale, then Lighthouse Tiki Bar and The Yucatan Beach Stand. After that, we’ll head back to The Mermaid Lounge for more fun, food and raffles,” said Kathy Van Selow, owner of the Mermaid Lounge, along with her husband, Scott, and their daughter, Valerie. “Please join us on this very special walk to help a very good local cause.”
The cost to participate in the walk is $20, which includes one poker hand and a commemorative Walk the Walk for Breast Cancer T-shirt. T-shirts will also be available for $10 each.
Registration begins at 11 a.m. at The Mermaid and the walk begins at noon.

The Cadillac hosts breast cancer benefit Saturday, Oct. 13
The Cadillac, 16641 San Carlos Blvd., is proud to host a breast-cancer benefit Saturday, Oct. 13, between 1 and 3 p.m.
Helene and Jimmy, the restaurant owners, invite patrons to come out, enjoy delicious, fresh-made dishes and sign the Chevy Camaro that will be parked in front of the establishment that day, to help raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research.
“A portion of the proceeds of every meal sold during the event will go to the breast cancer fund,” Helene said. “Entertainment that day is donated by Don White and Just Country. Come in to hear them, have lunch and support a great cause!”
For more information on Saturday’s benefit, feel free to call the establishment, 267-4132.
Fort Myers Beach bartender raises funds for
upcoming Making Strides walkathon
The Lee County American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walkathon event takes place at Tanger Outlets, 20350 Summerlin Road, Fort Myers, Saturday, Oct. 20, with registration beginning at 7 a.m.
Fort Myers Beach resident Maria DeFazio has been making and taking strides, herself, raising funds during her benefit walk that day, and has already reached her goal three times!
“My aunt, Terry Fuller, already beat breast cancer once, and my family and I are doing this in her honor,” she said. “I’m almost at my goal of $1,500 and would love to raise it higher for this cause.”
Maria said she’d also love to have some fellow islanders join her during the walk next Saturday. If interested in teaming up with our local bartender, or to make a contribution to her cause, email MariaDeFazio@comcast.net, or visit Main.ACSevents.org/

You can also visit her at The Mermaid Monday or Thursday, or at Valerie’s Lounge Friday.
