LCSO updates Daily Traffic Enforcement
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is providing the information listed below in continuing efforts to increase traffic safety awareness and education, plus to emphasize the importance of obeying traffic laws to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and death on Lee County roads.
On Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, the Traffic Unit will target at least one of the following three locations for enforcement:
Alico Road, Fort Myers
San Carlos Boulevard, Fort Myers Beach
North Cleveland Avenue (U.S. 41), North Fort Myers
Locations are selected based upon high incidents of crashes, traffic surveys and citizen complaints. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to promoting traffic safety and enforcing the law. By focusing on violations such as red light running, speeding, DUI and others, motorists become more alert and are encouraged to obey traffic laws. The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit and District Patrol Deputies enforce our traffic laws each day by issuing citations and warnings. Preliminary results from their cumulative activity yesterday are as follows:
Citations Issued:64
Written Warnings Issued:134
Citizens can help by letting us know if they observe problem areas, aggressive or impaired drivers and by their compliance with the rules of the road. To get in touch with one of our traffic deputies call 477-1000. If you see a reckless or drunk driver while you are traveling in your motor vehicle in Lee County, dial 9-1-1.

Everyone is reminded to “Fasten Your Seat Belts, be courteous to drivers and pedestrians and together we can reduce traffic related fatalities, injuries and property damage.
Note: Rolling past stop signs is dangerous. Many motorists have gotten into the bad habit of not consciously being sure their vehicle has come to a complete stop at posted stop signs. This habit often places the nose of your vehicle in an intersection in the path of on-coming traffic. Remember to stop before the sign,crosswalk or pavement marking.

Hart Road, North Fort Myers
Estero Boulevard, Fort Myers Beach
Palm Beach Boulevard (State Road 80), Fort Myers

Note: The “Move Over Act” requires motorists on multi-lane highways provide an empty lane between them and emergency vehicles parked and displaying visual signals. Additionally, you must reduce your speed to 20 mph below the posted speed limits. If on a two-lane roadway it is required that you slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit as you approach and pass the public safety or law enforcement vehicle. On two-lane roads with speed limits 20 mph or less the motorist must drop to a speed of 5 miles per hour.

Note: This weekend, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit will conduct D.U.I. “saturation” patrols in undisclosed locations of Lee County. These roving patrols are an enhancement to the daily commitment of our deputies to remove impaired drivers from our roadways with the ultimate goal of reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities.
