LCSO releases sobriety checkpoint results
A sobriety checkpoint was conducted in Lee County at North Cleveland Avenue (U.S. 41) and Hancock Bridge Parkway in North Fort Myers, Florida, beginning on Friday night, Aug. 17. All vehicles traveling north on North Cleveland Avenue were checked. The following are the results of the activity that began at 11 p.m. and ended at 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning:
– DUI arrests: 06
– Driving While License Suspended: 07
– No valid drivers license: 02
– Possession of a controlled substance: 01
– Citations issued: 49
– Number of vehicles passing through checkpoint: 1,050
The primary emphasis for checkpoints is to:
– Remove impaired drivers from the roadway
– Reduce the likelihood impaired drivers will operate their vehicles on our roadways
– Heighten public awareness
– Educate the public on the dangers of drunk driving.
This weekend’s checkpoint involved members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol, Fort Myers Police Department, Lee County Port Authority Police Department and the Florida Department of Transportation and was held in conjunction with the national traffic safety campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
