Drivers watch out for students
School has begun throughout southwest Florida.
The Florida Department of Transportation urges drivers to plan extra travel time and watch for children near the roadway during the early morning hours. Work zones may be part of travel routes for drivers and school buses, so remember to use caution and anticipate some delays. Drivers on US 41 northbound near Alico Road, for example, are using two lanes, which is near Rayma C. Page school. We ask everyone to use caution.
Other tips:
– Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits.
– Be alert for reduced speed limits in designated school speed zones.
– Watch for school buses. Red flashing lights and an extended stop arm indicate the school bus is stopping to load or unload children. Know and follow the state law that requires you to stop.
– Keep an eye out for children riding their bicycles or walking in the street, especially where there are no sidewalks.
– Be alert for children playing and gathering near bus stops and for those who may dart into the street.
– When backing out of driveways or leaving garages, watch for children walking or biking to school.
– Some roadways in southwest Florida currently are under construction. This work as well as increased traffic and inclement weather may affect travel times. Please, courtesy, caution, common sense, and patience go a long way toward safety on our roads.
