Beach Library is closed this week for move
We received authorization to move into the new library addition. Excitement was evident!!!! We will be closed Monday, Aug.13 to Saturday, Aug. 18, while we move from the current library into the expansion. Materials may be returned to the exterior drop.
Saving energy
Today, energy efficiency is an essential element of every library and realistically of every home and business. In fact, lighting can account for up to 40 percent of a commercial building’s yearly electricity usage. You may notice a variety of occupancy/vacancy sensors, light controls and harvesting (light only comes on when light from window is inadequate) in the expansion. We are optimistic about this approach for energy can be saved without sacrificing style or convenience.
Friends
Involvement with the Friends of the Library, a non-profit group that seeks to support the Beach Library provides continued good will to keep growing. Membership forms are available in the library or request one from the membership chair at beachfriends@comcast.net. The quarterly newsletter gives you a chance to be informed and involved.
Volunteers
We’ve enjoyed the variety of volunteers who helped us prepare for the move. A few of these volunteers have found that for the most part, an exciting life doesn’t happen to you. (And when it does, it may not be the kind of excitement you want!) By participating in packing books and collectibles, dusting, moving boxes, double checking lists, several found ways to add to their life in small ways by shifting their perspective -and having these daily moving tasks helped.
Volunteers are an essential part in the life of the Beach Library. Many thanks to all who shared time and effort and good will in recent weeks. Over the years, we also appreciate the many who have done so much to bring us to this wonderful moment in our community history.
Determining library value
How much value do you receive from using the library? Go to the library homepage at www.fmb.lib.fl.us and on the bottom of the page, click on the Calculator. Then fill in what you use and this translates into dollar value.
Community Room
With the completion of the expansion, we will have use of the new Community Room. Groups interested in using the Community Room can pick up a reservation and liability form. The reservation form includes details. Read also the Guidelines. We will gradually add more activities. It will be slower while we are still under construction with the renovation of the current library. But as you’ve seen from the past months, staying open and still moving forward with construction is possible with planning, dedication and working together. We will continue!
Smoke-Free
In the interest of the health and safety of patrons, volunteers, and employees, the Beach Library has been designated as a smoke-free and tobacco-free facility. Please do not use any type of tobacco product in the Library building, parking areas, and throughout the grounds of the library.
In collaboration with Lee County Health Department and the “Tobacco Free Lee” initiative, anyone needing to use tobacco products is to enter the pedestrian flow on public land. In practice, this means walking on the sidewalk, where one exists, or on the side of the street, if there is no sidewalk, in the direction that pedestrian traffic is going. Please do not discard cigarette or cigar butts or other residue of tobacco on the campus.
Playaways
Keep in mind that our new collection of Playaways are available. We are beginning to get comments from early users and it appears to be positive. New titles are arriving each week and the collection will be expanded.
Playaways are self-playing, pre-loaded digital media players. It has five narration speeds so you can listen at your own pace. It is pocket-size and weighs only two ounces!
Moving
There will likely be some opening surprises as we get adjusted to the new building and new operating procedures. Thank you in advance for your support. Next week’s article will highlight what to expect during the opening of the expansion and the next few months while the renovation of the current library is in process.
Library Hours
We are closed this week. A new phone system will be installed on Monday and Tuesday of this week. It will include a message regarding closure and opening beginning mid-week.
