Grouper Grab set for Port Sanibel Marina
The 13th Annual Grouper Grab fishing tournament will take place at Port Sanibel Marina on Friday, Aug. 17 and Saturday, Aug. 18.
On Friday, the mandatory Captains Meeting will be held at The Lighthouse Waterfront Restaurant at 6 p.m. Anglers will receive tournament gear, the rules will be read, questions answered and appetizers served. The Grab will have two divisions this year: The Big Boat Division (30 feet and over) and the Small Boat Division (under 30 feet) making the field as fair as possible for all of those competing.
The original format returns: three grouper and two snapper per team will be weighed individually and the heaviest total weight of those five fish wins it.
On Saturday, fishing will begin at 6 a.m. with all teams required to be back to the weigh station at Port Sanibel Marina by 6 p.m. that evening. The public is invited to come to the weigh station and check out all of the action!
The awards dinner will be held following the weigh-in. As the official weigh master weighs each team’s catch, the grouper and snapper will be filleted and brought straight to the grill. While tournament participants enjoy dinner, officials will tally all scores. Tournament winners in both divisions will be announced, while checks and trophies will be awarded to the top teams along with bragging rights.
The entry fee is $700 per boat, which includes a four-person team. Any additional angler is $100 each.
The Grab has a long history of being one of the top grouper tournaments in the State of Florida and this year will be no exception. Several new sponsors have come on board, providing anglers with the ideal marina location, high-end performance shirts and great hotel rates.
Grouper Grab officials would like to specially thank Port Sanibel Marina, the 2012 Presenting Level Sponsor. They offer a prime location and have been generous to provide dock slips free of charge to all registered teams.
Another new sponsor is the Big Boat Sponsor Tunaskin. The gear they are providing to the anglers this
year is top notch.
Blessings in a Backpack will be the primary beneficiary from the auction and raffle. The “Blessings in a
Backpack” program steps-up where federal aid stops by feeding local school children on the weekend.
