Prepare for Labor Day traffic with FDOT’S 511 traffic system

Labor Day is one of the most dangerous weekends for roadway travel according to the National Safety Council. A study comparing traffic deaths between 2003 and 2008 showed a 15.7 percent increase in traffic deaths Labor Day weekend versus non-holiday, three-day weekends.
The Florida 511 system is a safety resource from FDOT so travelers can know about roadway conditions before they get on the road. By knowing about crashes, construction and congestion in advance, travelers can choose to take an alternate route and stay calm on the road.
“FDOT’s primary mission is to provide a safe transportation system for Florida’s residents and visitors,” said FDOT Secretary Ananth Prasad. “The Florida 511 system helps travelers make better decisions by informing them of traffic before they get on the road this holiday weekend.”
The Florida 511 app is the newest addition to FDOT’s suite of resources for traffic information. It is available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. In addition to traffic and travel times, the app allows travelers to see traffic before getting on the highway. FDOT’s traffic camera views are now included in the app in association with traffic incidents and congestion. The 511 app uses the iPhone’s GPS tracking to provide users with traffic information and travel times within miles of their location.
