Donald McGurer Hussey, 87, passed away May 28, 2011 in Sebring FL. He was

born Aug. 2, 1923 and raised in Columbus Ohio. He became a Navy pilot in World War II and graduated from Ohio State University after the war.

Don was a contractor in Columbus for 20 years before moving to Fort Myers Beach in 1976. His accomplishments while living on Fort Myers Beach include serving a term as chair of the FMB Chamber of Commerce, the United Way and as president of the FMB Board of Realtors.

Don was instrumental in securing the meeting facilities for recovering alcoholics in Columbus and Fort Myers. He was active in the real estate community building Gulf-front condominiums throughout the 1980’s: Surf Song, Pelican Watch, Dolphin Watch and Island Shores.

Don was an Elder at Chapel by the Sea and served on the Building Committee for the present chapel. He was co-chair of the fund raising efforts to build the safety path which runs parallel to Estero Boulevard. Don loved life, his friends and family, and had a deep desire to help others and make a positive difference in the communities where he lived.

He is survived by his wife, Gale, of 33 years, and four daughters: Deborah Hussey, Donna George (Craig), Dianne Kuwahara (Toshio), and Melinda Harris (plus many grandchildren and step children).
