PHOTO PROVIDED The largest group, Summer Camp of Taekwondo United, brought 22 campers aged 5-12 years to help in the cleanup, which served as their weekly service project. Others who cleaned the beach for this event were students from various colleges as well as residents and tourists who simply saw news of the event and elected to help.

PHOTO PROVIDED Students from a summer camp in Estero helped the Fort Myers Beach Community Foundation clean the beach and then load bags on Town all-terrain vehicles.

In the early morning on July 5, Fort Myers Beach looked as if disaster had struck–firework debris, beer and soda cans, abandoned chairs and food wrappers, etc. lined the beach. However, by 11 a.m., many individuals had signed in, collected bags and gloves and cleaned the beach.

The Fifth of July Cleanup is a post-firework cleanup effort held on Fort Myers Beach and coordinated by the Fort Myers Beach Community Foundation and Keep Lee County Beautiful.

The event was a success with 96 volunteers working during the morning to clean the firework debris and other trash on Fort Myers Beach from two locations: Newton Park and Crescent Family Park. Volunteers were recruited workers and given cold water and snacks donated by the organizations.
