LCSO conducts bicycle safety operation

1 min read

A recent fatal accident involving a bicyclist in Bonita Springs prompted the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a bicycle safety operation in that very area.

On May 12, 2011, the Bonita Springs Community Policing Unit targeted bicycle safety in the area along Old U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs. The focus of the all-day operation was to identify bicyclists violating traffic laws and educate them on bicycle safety and traffic statutes.

In all, thirty bicyclists were stopped. Deputies issued 25 warnings and one citation for violations. Bicyclists were educated on topics including proper use of bicycle lights and proper direction of lane travel.

One arrest was made for an out of county warrant.

The Bonita Springs Community Policing Unit conducts these operations periodically to remind bicyclists that safety is as much their responsibility as it is for the motoring public.
