Families are welcome to join Lee County Parks & Recreation and The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida’s Kohl’s Center for Safety Program for a free Health and Safety Fair at the Pine Island Pool from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21.
All activities and admission are free at the Pine Island Pool located at Phillips Park, 5675 Sesame Drive, Pine Island.
Among the activities:
– Sign up for summer swimming lessons or Junior Life Guard Camp
– Water safety tips for parents and children
– Live music

“The purpose of the event is to have Pine Islanders and our neighbors come together in a positive environment to enjoy the pool and to emphasize the importance of drowning prevention and health,” said Sandy Reynolds, aquatics supervisor of the Pine Island Pool for Lee County Parks & Recreation. “Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under age 5 in the state of Florida and is 100 percent preventable.”
Drowning prevention tips include:
– Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your child when he or she is in or near water.
– Teach children basic water safety tips.
– Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments.
– Have a telephone close by when you or your family is using a pool or spa.
– If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first.
Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors.
