BORC Bash/ Family Fun Day at two sites Saturday
The Town of Fort Myers Beach is offering two free community events this Saturday and promises to have something for everyone at two different locations on Estero Island.
First off, Bay Oaks Recreational Campus will host the second annual BORC Bash featuring an arts & craft show; disc golf tournament; carnival games for children; corn hole tournament; the best street performers on the Beach; fitness demonstrations; and free admission to the Beach Pool. The fun begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 2 p.m.
“Primarily, we want to provide an event that will be affordable for families and allow them to have a day where they can come in and enjoy their community park,” said Town Recreation Manager Nicole Olsen. “We want to get everybody together and enjoy the time outside in this awesome weather before it gets too warm in the summer. We hope that people bring their families down and remember that Bay Oaks is here for the community and for our visitors as well.”
Also on Saturday, Newton Park will hold its first annual Family Fun Day from 9 a.m. to noon. The beachfront park will offer several activities such as natural treasure walks along the beach: a presentation by Turtle Time, Inc. on sea turtles; a children’s sand sculpting contest; and a bocce ball clinic, which will include members of the Southwest Florida Bocce League informing about the games’ rules and regulations.
“The Town is looking forward to this opportunity to showcase the amenities at Newton Park from an expanded access point to our beautiful sandy beach, bocce courts, picnic areas and new programs and events geared towards kids of all ages,” said Cultural Resources Director Theresa Schober.
If the first annual BORC Bash on Oct. 3, 2009, is any measure of success, expect attendance to be a positive factor. Close to 800 people visited Bay Oaks during the inaugural event.
That first BORC Bash celebrated the spirit of community and served as a get-to-know event put on by the Town to display their newly acquired recreation center, ball fields and community pool. The town officially took over ownership and operations of the campus Oct. 1 of that year.
Now town officials are looking to boost the first town-owned public park on Fort Myers Beach. The long-standing former residence of the late Jim and Ellie Newton was officially dubbed Newton Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 12, 2010.
BORC Bash activities schedule:
n Arts and Craft Show: 10am 2pm
The Arts and Craft Show features some of the best work from local artists and is a must see for Craft Lovers.
– Disc Golf Tournament: 10am- 2pm
The Disc Golf Tournament costs $20 for participants to register with Cash Prizes for the winners. Pre Registration is suggested.
– Carnival Games: 10am 2pm
Carnival games are free for everyone. Your favorite games at the fair or carnival games here at Bay Oaks.
– Corn Hole Tournament: 10am 2pm
The Corn Hole Tournament costs $20 for teams to participate. Pre Registration is suggested.
– Street Performers: 10am 2pm
The best of the Times Square Street Performers will be entertaining everyone with their various acts. Some of the acts will include a clown and the ever-popular Escape Artist act.
– Free admission to the Beach Pool
Coupons will be handed out for guests to enjoy one free-day pass to the Beach Pool.
