EIHS announces two events
Historical Boat Cruise: Join the next historical boat cruise on Feb. 9. Historical boat tours of Estero Island and the Back Bay have always been popular attractions. The Jan. 26 Estero Island Historical Society tour, aboard Fish Tale Marina’s Estero Bay Express boat, sold out in just 2 days! A.J. Bassett, EIHS Board member extraordinaire, has volunteered to lead a second tour, on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, from 10 a.m. to noon. The tour leaves out of Fish Tale Marina’s Ship’s Store and travels northward along the entire length of Estero Island, then back to Fish Tale. Tickets, at $30 each, are on sale as of Thursday, Jan. 27, at both Century 21 and Tri-Power Realty locations.
These boat tours are a delightful way to learn about the history of our beautiful area. They are also an important fundraiser for the Estero Island Historical Society. If you have any questions, please contact A.J. Bassett at 463-9701. We hope to see you aboard!
Guest Speaker at next meeting: Terry Cain will be the next speaker at the public meeting of the Estero Island Historical Society on Monday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. at St. Raphael’s Parish Hall, 5601 Williams Drive. The public is welcome to this presentation, free of charge.
How has Fort Myers Beach changed in the past 70 years? Using aerial photos from the 1940s, Terry will describe the changing natural profile of Matanzas Pass and especially Bowditch Point. She will explain island dynamics, how barrier islands continually change, and the impact of human activity on the ecosystem.
Terry Cain visited Fort Myers Beach in 1975 and decided this is where she wanted to live because the small-town feel and kind residents reminded her of her island home in New Jersey.
Since that time, Terry has been very involved in the community. She was chair of the Marine Resources Task Force, a member of the Cultural and Environmental Learning Center, a member of the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program and Estero Bay Agency for Bay Management. She is past president and current board member of the Estero Bay Buddies and is currently a board member of Keep Lee County Beautiful. She served her town as a Councilwoman and Vice Mayor and created the “Treasures of the Sea Program.” She has a degree in Marine Science.
Terry, her husband, Capt. Richard Cain, and two sons still live on Fort Myers Beach.
